Plastic Micro Wind Turbines Available for Sale

April 21st, 2007

Excellent option for low wind areas. Man, the price is right! 20 micro turbines with generator rated 170W for 10m/s of wind: US$250!?

Via: PESN:

Two of the biggest hurdles for using wind power have been cost and the need for strong winds. A Hong Kong businessman/inventor has found a way to overcome those problems with plastic, bringing the generation cost down to around 1 cent per kilowatt-hour.

“Motorwind power generation starts with 2 m/s wind speed but it starts to be economically viable for winds of at least 4m/s if you are concerned by pay back time.” It can be installable anywhere due to the modularity. The size of Motorwind can be adapted to the available space and the energy required. The design simplicity and components used make the installation and maintenance very easy for anyone. The simplicity allows very low manufacturing costs and therefore very low retail price.”

    Unbelievable! But I believe it!

    I just wish his turnaround time was quicker. This could be a VERY hot item, at this price. I am very interested in renewable energy, but solar is so darn expensive!

    At least I can use the same battery, inverter, (and probably charge controller) if I wanted to go with one of these setups.

    Just to help out anyone who doesn’t have a feel for wind speeds in meters per second, and wants to see imperial units:

    2 m/s => 4.5 mph
    4 m/s => 9 mph
    10 m/s => 22 mph

    Takes 8 weeks for delivery, not certified for grid intertie yet (coming in 2008), no installation services available yet, but cost is only $4 US per watt vs $100 per watt for solar, and it works at night if there is a breeze!

    This would be great for windy cities like Wellington, NZ. Does NZ have grid interie laws?

    Drop me an email on when/where these can be purchased. Honestly, this appears to be just another one of those things that will never actually get to market. Not that it can’t, couldn’t or shouldn’t, but mark my words….it won’t.

    Enjoy.

    don’t you understand?

    Enjoy.

    Wind is moving into the mainstream. Many of the wind turbine manufacturers are booked through 2008 and most are outside the US (thanks to egregious US Government subsides of $33 billion to oil/coal between 1992 and 2002).

    Done right, 70% of US energy could be renewable.
