British Police Opening Thousands of Safe Deposit Boxes, Searching for Gold, Other “Criminal Assets”

June 9th, 2008

Via: BBC:

Six suitcases packed with suspected gold dust and about £30m in cash has been found during searches of safety deposit centres in London, police say.

The Met Police believe criminals used the centres in Park Lane, Hampstead and Edgware to store criminal assets.

Armed police continue to guard the buildings as specialist officers search the 7,000 safety deposit boxes.

So far only a third of the boxes have been opened and the finds have also included a firearm, counterfeit currency, several works of Renaissance art and a substantial amount of high value jewellery.

Speaking after the raids Commander Allan Gibson said: “Search teams have been working around the clock to open all the boxes at the location and are progressing well, although we are likely to remain at the locations for some time yet.

Actually, this news has been out at least a week. As far as some of this being “criminal assets” it may be that some of these criminals will be folks us Cryptogon readers might be familiar with, and their criminality. International Currency Review editor Christopher Story has maybe the best explanation at the link below

“In other words, this is not America, where the Rule of Law has decayed and almost collapsed, but Britain, where the police still take meticulous care to operate within the framework of the law.”

    What a load of shit.

Is that the same source that said Paulson was arrested?

    edit: Same source.

@Snorky – As the housing crisis has hopefully taught us, banks are no longer a safe haven of anything.
    Snort.
A bank as a safety deposit box for your assets?
Grow up. Get out and make your own.
Document for those you care to know.
And get the hell out of the boxes.
First place to be raided and cordoned off in a time of crisis, as these events in the article prove. Yessiree, you just try going to a bank to get your guns and money in a crisis. You might as well paint a target on your chest – SHOOT HERE.
