China: Regime Admits 10% of Farmland Polluted with Heavy Metals

November 7th, 2011

Considering the source, I’d start by doubling or tripling the estimate.

Via: AFP:

About 10 percent of China’s farmland contains excessive levels of heavy metals due to contaminated water and poisonous waste seeping into the soil, state media said Monday, citing a government survey.

Pollution from heavy metals such as lead, mercury and cancer-causing cadmium is often blamed for poisoning entire villages and crop-growing land in China as factory bosses flout environmental laws and farmers use toxic fertilisers.

The report in the Southern Metropolis Daily said the survey organised by the environmental protection ministry found about 10 percent of farmland had “striking problems of heavy metal levels exceeding (official) limits”.

“Heavy metal pollution incidents have occurred repeatedly in recent years,” Wan Bentai, chief engineer at the ministry, was quoted saying.

“From January to August alone there were 11 cases — nine involving lead in the blood.”

The report did not say what level of heavy metals was considered excessive or how much of the country’s agricultural land contained toxins.

Paired with the below report I would say it is probably more than just double or triple.

Thanks, I forgot about that one.

this report today says that atmospheric carbon dioxide levels have been rapidly increasing, despite the recession, because of practices in China, which are probably also responsible for the heavy metals. I wonder why factories in one spot rather than spread around the world would cause an increase in emissions. Perhaps energy generation is cleaner elsewhere.

When I was in China earlier I was well awaere of the 10 % figure but was hocked to ready in the “China daily” that some scientist think soil contamination could be as high as 90% ! A lot of this is caused by the coal fired power stations. On top of all this some dairy companies are still adding melamine, a company in Shanghai was reprocessing the previous day’s unsold steam buns (30,000) with unmeasured amounts of preservative & artificial sweetener, pigs were being fed pesticide to promote the growth of muscle over fat … and on it goes. To the national govts credit they take a dim view of this but there is not much they can do out in the provinces.

as jones has been saying for as long as ive heard him, china is the ideal NWO government/economic model. expect more of this from every single industrialized nation as “unity” is achieved globally. god help the bastards in the non-industrialized nations as they become hazardous dump sites, mostly there already tbh. every sci-fi out there relating to humans “abandoning” earth for the stars becomes truer everyday this continues. maybe its been the plan all along?

Although mercury is not highlighted, it is the major poison that is responsible for their explosion of birth defects. http://articles.latimes.com/2009/feb/02/world/fg-china-birth-defects2

Add to that the known loss of IQ, cancer, neuromotor diseases, emotional dysfunction and a host of other health issues and they are in big trouble.
