Windows XP Market Share Climbs Again as Customers Dig Their Heels In
March 5th, 2014Just about everyone I know with XP won’t budge, despite my warnings.
Maybe Microsoft has plans to try to convert millions of XP users over to Windows 8 with the rumored Windows 8.1 with Bing, which will supposedly be free.
Still, tens of millions of people will probably refuse to deal with the situation. I wouldn’t use Windows 8.x if someone paid me to use it. But I wouldn’t use XP on the Internet after that cut off date either. No way.

THE POPULAR Microsoft operating system that refuses to die, Windows XP, has seen a rise in popularity for the second month running.
Windows XP, which reaches end of life in a little more than four weeks, has continued its bizarre renaissance, according to this month’s Net Applications figures.

Saw this earlier today – 95% of American bank ATMs atill run on XP:

That’s right. While there is certainly potential for trouble, the fact that these systems are run on closed networks means that the threat is lower than that faced by the average user. However, it would not surprise me in the least if isolated but major incidents at banks resulted from this.
As someone who has worked in enterprises, I can tell you that those organizations often do not apply security updates automatically anyway. They’re afraid that something will break. They sometimes only apply updates to production systems after testing them extensively on non production systems.
In other words, yep, Windows XP end of life is coming, but what percentage of those ATMs are running fully patched versions of XP as of now? The answer, if we knew it, would probably be pretty shocking.
All you have to make Windows 8 useable is to install Start8 (start button replacement). After you do this Windows 8 looks and works almost identically to Windows 7.
