Open Thread: Space Doom
March 8th, 2012Lots of people like to submit Space Doom stories. Even though I wouldn’t normally post about this stuff, some of the boards I read (which rarely have any credible information on them anyway) are losing their minds over this solar flare event, which I doubt will amount to much, if anything at all.
I think that there is a deeply embedded Space Doom meme in fringe circles that was planted by Ed Dames with his Killshot woowoo back in the 1990s. That stuff went out over Art Bell’s radio show to millions of people and my guess is that the echos of it are still reverberating around the Internet.
Anyway, bring on the Space Doom!

Update: Ed Dames Still Going Strong
T let me know that Dames is still at it:
This is pretty much how I remember the story — and I like the heavy drama voice over. THE KILL SHOT. HAHA. Admittedly, I only ever listened to Art Bell as background noise, while waiting for something to download at about 30kbits/sec. and taking out seven to ten bottles of Moosehead.
When you say Space Doom, I think:

Ah, the good old days…
I used to use a soundboard like this around the office:

Has anyone noticed the sun has been SLEEPING? We’ve had minimal activity (and the “major” flares have been minor compared to those in the past) for a while now… makes me doubt very much that whatever anomalies or outages they are expecting is caused by “one of the largest storms in recent years.” DUH – we’re coming out of a solar minimum!
So we’re supposed to be approaching the peak, yet the sun is quiet. Compare current CME activity to the last peak around 2000-2002 (images available online) and see what I mean.
I dunno why but it smells like disinfo to me. Tinfoil hats on the ready!
Space Doom from the 1st century:
“Then the fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, causing it to scorch everyone with its fire and they were burned by the fierce heat”
“The second angel blew his trumpet, and something like a great mountain, burning with fire, was thrown into the sea, and a third of the sea became blood, a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed”
I got lost in this book. When Space Doom isn’t the end of the world: ‘Radix’ by A.A. Attanasio.
