Workers at Japan’s tsunami-damaged nuclear power plant temporarily halted work on Wednesday at the complex’s reactor No.2 because of high radiation levels, the nation’s nuclear safety watchdog said.
The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said the workers had withdrawn after radiation monitoring showed levels of 500 millisieverts per hour, which is into the danger zone.
There are hundreds of workers at the plant trying to avert nuclear disaster and, at times, they have had to withdraw from parts of the complex as radiation levels spike.
i’d been mulling that one over all of yesterday. i decided there was a coverup going on or it was a mistake. but your “[???]” were right Kevin. thanks for running Reuters’ correction.

I didn’t believe it. I thought that it had to be a mistake. Then Reuters went with it.
I let it percolate for a couple of hours, waiting for someone to correct it, before posting it. Anyway, it took them a bit longer than that.
that’s interesting. it really confirms my view that both translation and editing at Kyodo has gone downhill in the last 20 years. i’m not saying what they do isn’t useful, but it really has its limitations and, as you say, requires double checking for anything that looks fishy. if i see something in the English-language press covering Japan that i have a strong suspicion is wrong i often look at the Japanese-language sites to verify.
Kevin, if you have any specific things you want looked at and google doesn’t suffice, please let me know. i think there are a few other J-E translators watching Cryptogon too, so the chances are it wouldn’t take long to sort out.

Since this thing happened, the number of official posts on that Reuters thread has gone down. They have taken it in the shorts a few times trusting iffy English translations and I wonder if someone finally told them to slow the tempo down.
