They were released because they, “Are supposed to be leaving the country soon”???

Via: Savannah Morning News:

Effingham County sheriff deputies have reported the early Sunday morning arrest of three men to the federal Joint Terrorism Task Force.

The men, two from Russia and one from Kazakhstan, were found near Georgia Power’s Plant McIntosh on Old Augusta Road about 1 a.m. Sunday after a ranger with the Department of Natural Resources reported a suspicious vehicle, Effingham County sheriff’s spokesman David Ehsanipoor said.

Deputies reported the men, who were inside a 1995 Nissan Pathfinder, had a machete, shovel, wire cutters and ski masks. One man also had black silk stockings in his front left pocket.

Arrested were Evgeniy Luzhetskiy, of Kazakhastan Nail Idiatullin and Rustem Ibragimov of Russia. All three reported they lived in Charleston, S.C., deputies reported.

The men were all charged with possession of tools during the commission of a crime.

The three were released after being interviewed by task force members, Ehsanipoor said.

“They did all have visas that allowed them to be here and are supposed to be leaving the country soon.”

Kevin, somewhere on Cryptogon, maybe years ago, I remember you posting almost exactly this as a realistic scenario. Not the “pictures at eleven” news flash (explosives flash) but REAL damage would be done with shovel, bolt cutters, etc.

That was my 2002 cyberwar essay:

I have to tread carefully here, because this is a very, very serious issue, but let’s just say that the fiber optic and electricity “tubes” often run together.

Note to other readers: Don’t post maps to any critical infrastructure here. There are very few things that aren’t allowed here, but this area is simply ridiculous in its tendency to provoke a response from .gov/.mil.

Does this remind anyone of past events where arrestees are ‘sprung’, sometimes with visible diplomatic pressure, and then quietly repatriated to Israel ? I refer in particular to the arrest of two armed men inside the Mexican Legislature Building in October 2001 –

October 10, 2001: Two Israelis Are Detained in Mexican Legislature Building after Behaving Suspiciously and Found To Be Carrying Arms Two Israelis, Salvador Gersson Smike, 34, and Sar Ben Zui, 27, are arrested in the Mexican Congress Building in Mexico City. Smike is carrying a plastic 9 mm sophisticated Glock 9 mm pistol tucked into his underwear in his lower back. Glock pistols are made with a special plastic material and are very easy to smuggle. [Correo, 10/11/2001; El Heraldo de Mexico (Mexico City), 10/11/2001; Cronica de Hoy (Mexico City), 10/12/2001] He also has with him a briefcase reported to contain 58 bullets, bomb-making materials, three detonators, and nine grenades. [El Heraldo de Mexico (Mexico City), 10/11/2001] The two were apprehended after ex-sugarcane workers, who were waiting for a congressional hearing, saw the two Israelis behaving strangely at around 4:00 p.m. They were reportedly photographing the workers below the belt. When the workers demanded that the two men identify themselves, the Israelis said they were press photographers. The workers dismissed their claims, overcame them, and then discovered they were armed with pistols and other high caliber arms. The two men had apparently also been seen the day before taking pictures. [Cronica de Hoy (Mexico City), 10/12/2001] Security guards soon arrived, disarmed the men, and took them to the security office. At around 6:00 p.m., it is learned that the two men are Israelis and that one of them, Salvador Gersson, is a former colonel of the Israeli Special Forces. [Correo, 10/11/2001; Diario de Mexico (Mexico City), 10/11/2001 ] Soon after, a man claiming to be a supervisor from the company, Desarrollo de Sistemas de Seguridad Privada (Private Security Systems Development), says the two men are employees at the firm and that they were taking pictures because they are “vacationing.” The journalists who are present scoff at the claim. [Correo, 10/11/2001; El Heraldo de Mexico (Mexico City), 10/11/2001] After October 13, no additional information is reported about the incident.

This event led me to contact, by phone, then email, then fax, the various peoples I could locate in Mexcio City. No response what so ever, nada. There exists a very strong tradition that Israel will never abandon it’s ‘warriors’ to prison or detention on foreign soil (let’s not mention Mordecia Vanunu here) – there will be every effort made to secure release of any captured operatives. Pollard is still a strong focus of attention for this very reason.

These three “Russians” would never be offered this kind of extraction by Russia. America would never simply release, and lose interest, in such an evident sabotage arrest. This has every hallmark of a Mossad sub-contract or wildcard crew. Follow them from now on, and see where they fly off to – I’ll put money on this that I’m right.
