Curcumin Kills Cancer Cells

October 28th, 2009

Via: BBC:

An extract found in the bright yellow curry spice turmeric can kill off cancer cells, scientists have shown.

The chemical – curcumin – has long been thought to have healing powers and is already being tested as a treatment for arthritis and even dementia.

Now tests by a team at the Cork Cancer Research Centre show it can destroy gullet cancer cells in the lab.

Cancer experts said the findings in the British Journal of Cancer could help doctors find new treatments.

Dr Sharon McKenna and her team found that curcumin started to kill cancer cells within 24 hours.

‘Natural’ remedy

The cells also began to digest themselves, after the curcumin triggered lethal cell death signals.

Dr McKenna said: “Scientists have known for a long time that natural compounds have the potential to treat faulty cells that have become cancerous and we suspected that curcumin might have therapeutic value.”

Or you could just include turmeric in all or most of your soups and other various sauces and marinades and so on ad infinitum, like we’ve been doing for several years now.

“Scientists have known for a long time…”

Funny how when we try to discuss these sorts of phenomena with the family docs (sister and sister-in-law) their eyes glaze over and we are yet again branded as the “nutrition freaks” who get all their information via “unreliable” Internet sources, despite the fact that we are also hooked in to other valuable resources like the WAPF quarterly journal, etc., that focus on scientific studies that back the basic assertions on display in this article in spades.

As ever, over- and under-informed at the same time, they whip out their trusty medical shield — the word “anecdotal” — every time we try to illustrate the efficacy of our methodology by pointing out our own radically improved heath as an example they can see up close and personal.

And then a story like this surfaces via a major media outlet like the BBC, and suddenly it’s real and important — and forgotten by next week as they keep right on stuffing their faces with the usual corpus-killing false fats, refined sugars and chemical dreck passed off as “improvements” to the human diet, when in reality they are at the very root of most of what ails the “civilized” world.

    Sigh. \rant mode OFF

This week I am “celebrating” the 10 year anniversary of my mother’s hemoraghic brain stem stroke. What a freakin nightmare. Let’s see – one month or more in intensive care where Mom developed a bed sore the size of teacup on what is called the dicubitis (tailbone); then was on a ventilator; ice beds; and then contracted MRSA; I forget what the disease is called when a person takes so many antibiotics that they develop a shitting disease, etc. Oh that’s C-dif. Yuh, Mom and I have been through freaking hell.
But Mom’s still here. I don’t understand her fighting spirit, but she has one of those for sure.
I keep repeating to myself – why does Mom go on? But so far – I think her condition and that she has lived so long afterwards – has really had an impact. So don’t give up when others roll their eyes.
For example, we used honey to heal Mom’s dicubutis. When “they” said it would never heal. That big red sore oh my god. We coated it with honey and guaze – and not exactly presto, but it healed – when the hospital that caused it said it never would.
The good news in the US is that now when a patient develops a bedsore while in hospital – the hospital eats the cost. Why should the hospital be paid for not turning, cleaning, etc. This rocks for me. I used to drive two hours one way every night while Mom was in hospital after her stroke, and she looked like she had never been moved. Probably wasn’t. Mom is never in hospital without caregivers there at her side.
When Mom contracted C-difficilus from antibiotics I found that Boulardi would correct C-difficulis – and my mother’s pulminologist has made this a regimen for an entire hospital when patients are given antibiotics. Florerestore is the product. I can’t believe this to be what is occurring in hospital now. Beneficial bacterium a regimen now? Kind of blows my mind because
people (not only in the medical profession) but in all walks of life have been rolling their eyes at me most of my life. All my weird ideas. The eye rolling and all the other attitudes have really hurt me. Big time. Double plus.
But so what. I work at getting over my ego ALL THE TIME because I’ve learned, This is NOT all about me.
On this ten year anniversary, I believe my Mom is teaching me, I am teaching others, and if true to the Mentor you have within you – well good things do happen.
I don’t KNOW who my inner Mentor is but I’ve been hearing the messages loud and clear for a long time now.
I don’t know how to close this – but @Miraculux – maybe find another doctor, if you need affirmation.
Doesn’t sound like you need that.
Just let them roll their eyes.
I made Curried apple soup this weekend and yikes. Best taken in small doses.

    @Eileen:
good on you for persisting with the honey dressing. i wish you and your mother all the best.

  4. Eileen says:

    Thanks tochigi.
We’re using d-mannose to treat Mom’s current urinary tract infection (only efficable when e coli is the culprit). Case has been referred to Dr. B. Hah. Imagine if an entire hospital of people are treated for their urinary tract infections with D-mannose (a sugar)instead of antibiotics? Some FdA flucker will be on the case.
