Saudi Arabia reportedly warned German authorities three times about the perpetrator of a Christmas market massacre that killed five people and injured hundreds.
Officials said a nine-year-old child is among the dead.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke of the ‘brutality’ of killing and injuring so many people. ‘It is a terribly tragic accident’, he told reporters.
Germans on Saturday mourned the victims and their shaken sense of security after an anti-Islam doctor rammed into a massive crowd of shoppers at a Christmas market in Magdeburg at around 7pm on December 20 with a dark BMW.
Psychologist Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, who arrived in Germany in 2006 as a refugee from Saudi Arabia, was arrested on Friday evening at the site of the attack and was taken into custody.
In 2013 he was sentenced by a German court for ‘disturbing the public peace by threatening to commit crimes’, according to Der Spiegel.
Three years later, he applied for asylum in Germany and his application was approved within four months.
