Kindle Scribe: Amazon Has Finally Announced a New Large Format E-Book Reader
September 29th, 2022Today, Amazon announced a new, large format e-book reader called the Kindle Scribe.
About a decade ago, I bought a Kindle DX just before Amazon stopped making them. It wasn’t an easy choice. However, I (and members of my family) have used the device almost daily since.
I’ve had to become the household Kindle whisperer to keep it running. Of course, the device is designed to prevent users from opening it. I only took it apart/risked physically breaking it after it had bricked itself and I had nothing to lose.
Once inside, one can change out the—difficult to find—battery and hit the internal reset button.
Another time, after the small 5-way button broke in half, I delicately managed to superglue it back together.
I’ve found a specific USB charger that will charge the device more reliably than others.
On and on…
For a decade, Amazon refused to make another large format Kindle, despite the outcry from customers. Various other Chinese companies did produce devices with large e-paper displays, but the prices were always breath taking, and getting books purchased from Amazon onto those devices was… Let’s say that it was complicated. Sony released the DPT-RP1, and, in an apparent fit of madness, priced it at $699.
I was happy to keep fiddling with my ancient Kindle DX. And, who knows… Maybe I’ll be able to keep it on the rails for another decade!
But it’s nice to know that there is finally another large format Kindle available.

Oh, yeah, you can write on it. I wouldn’t suggest doing that as every word will be accessible by Amazon. I’m a terrible salesman. While I’d like to earn a commission from you buying that thing, I need to warn you that Amazon will have total access to your marginalia and whatever else you write on it. *sigh*
