A tent village housing more than 250 homeless people has been set up in Tokyo’s Hibiya Park, opposite one of the country’s most luxurious hotels.

The organisers say many of the people in the park are victims of the recent economic downturn.

The homeless include temporary workers who have lost their jobs and company accommodation in recent months.

Established by labour unions and volunteers, the tent village offers free food, shelter and employment advice to the jobless.

The Japanese Government estimates that in the next few months 85,000 contract workers face the sack because of the economic crisis.
