In many cases, there will also be, at the end of rituals in the pattern described, some kind of rebirth or re-identification sometimes involving the marking of the flesh of the initiant or perhaps the awarding of an adornment, e.g. a ring or a cloak, that indicates a new status of authority or acceptance.

It strikes me that if what’s going on now is some sort of initiation, though the act itself could have the desired social conditioning effect, there could well be some sort of psychologically powerful and impactful event at the end of this that functions as a ‘coming into light’ (or “reality”). In other words, the psychological preparation is aimed at maximising susceptibility to the belief or acceptance of a new worldview.
