Millions Lost Power in Florida

February 27th, 2008

So fragile.

Via: Miami Herald:

Power has been restored to the vast majority of the millions of South Floridians and other state residents who endured a major blackout Tuesday — a failure caused by a fire in a Miami-Dade County substation, according to utility officials.

Virtually everyone in South Florida had power by 5:30 p.m. and only about 40,000 customers around the state remained in the dark — mostly due to unrelated outages caused by a powerful cold front that is moving down the peninsula, officials said.

At its peak, the main power failure left as many as four million people without electricity in South Florida, along the Gulf Coast, in the Orlando area and elsewhere around the state, according to state officials.

The outage was caused by a fire at Florida Power & Light’s Flagami substation — not in the utility’s nuclear plant at Turkey Point, as reported earlier by some media outlets, FPL President Armando Olivera said during an evening news conference.

Both nuclear reactors at Turkey Point tripped off as a safety measure, taking a plant that supplies power to more than 450,000 homes almost instantly off-line and causing a shortage that affected other parts of the power grid, he said.

But the problems at Turkey Point were a consequence of the initial failure, not the originating cause, FPL said.

The “resident inspector” at Turkey Point Nuclear Plants assured the News Media that everything was just peachy keen there; News Media changes “official” story from initially saying the FIRE was at the NUKE Plant, to the NEW “official” story that it WASN’T at the Nuke Plant?

Homeland Security lady in Washington, D.C. assures News Media that it “wasn’t TERRORISM related”. (Umm, how exactly does this woman KNOW this for sure, if she is in D.C. & NOT down in Florida?)

Everything Peachy Keen at all our Nuke Plants, just like at the California MEAT PLANT, which also has a “resident inspector”. To ensure the Meat going to MILLIONS of School Kids is safe. “Heckuva Job” Mr. Resident Meat Inspector!

Thank the Lord our Dear Leader BUSH is keeping us safe! Why, otherwise I might wonder why there have been not ONE, not TWO, but THREE Explosions & Fires, with massive injury, death & evacutions of 1,000’s of citizens, at OIL REFINERIES!

But, we can rest easy. All EXPLOSIONS & FIRES & Massive EVACUATIONS since 9’11 have ALL been due to “ACCIDENTS”. So we should ALL VOTE for the Republican Presidential candidate, because:
“There have been no domestic terrorists attacks since 9/11, because our Dear Leader Bush & Vice Pres. Dick have, along with the brave, patriotic REPUBLICANS in Congress, & the Big Brains at HOMELAND SECURITY, have kept us safe.”

    Odd phenomenon.
Power down on circuits at Mom’s house in Pa but the breaker didn’t trip.
Could a power surge be felt all that way?
    Actually yes.
    Electricity is an energy generated.
A surge- well yes,it can travel for 1000’s of miles.
That Florida built a nuclear power plant on its shores is “not logical” as Spock would say. Dumb shit brains multiplied to the highest exponent.
    Sooo much sun to harvest.
Sure the place is a humidifier and is a furnace of heat on full blast.
But Christ almighty. Harness the sun for power already you assholes.
