Dutch researchers are trying to grow pork meat in a laboratory with the goal of feeding millions without the need to raise and slaughter animals.

“We’re trying to make meat without having to kill animals,” Bernard Roelen, a veterinary science professor at Utrecht University, said in an interview.

Although it is in its early stages, the idea is to replace harvesting meat from livestock with a process that eliminates the need for animal feed, transport, land use and the methane expelled by animals, which all hurt the environment, he said.

“Keeping animals just to eat them is in fact not so good for the environment,” said Roelen. “Animals need to grow, and animals produce many things that you do not eat.”

I suppose that will have the Dutch in direct competition with vested animal husbandry interests? …. http://rawstory.com/news/afp/Bush_says_Chinese_need_to_eat_US_be_05252007.html

Given the size of the potential market, I trust that Utrecht are ensuring that every step of the way is protected/patented …… with a inclusive viral marker to show when it has been poached.

I thought that was a neat idea when I first read about it in a SciFi novel by Walter Jon Williams, ‘Angel Station’. If we have gotten to the point that growing steaks in a vat is to be thought of as a ‘solution’ to a problem, perhaps there are other problems we are no talking about.

    Puts new meaning to….

    “Frank-en-furter”

This is seriously bizarre news. I suppose someone could lump this in and call it Brave-new-worldian but I shudder at the thought. Still, ye olde mind reals and other names bubble to the surface.

    “Tube Steak”, “Vat-O-Veal”, “Science Sausages”

    …..”Soylent Green”…..

there’s a few interesting things about this statement. let’s change the perspective to people.

‘keeping people just to use them is in fact not so good for the environment. people need to grow, and people produce a great many things that we do not need.’

we are what we consume as a growth medium….

Haha yeah “Soylent Green”, exactly what i thought!

This goes to show you how extensive a paradigm shift we really need to experience. There is absolutely no need for such technology. If I’m not willing to eat a tomato with a wormhole in it (which I’m am) than strike me from the face of the earth right now. Better yet eat the worm too! This is bizarre technology that will only serve to enslave humanity further. The only way out of our predicament is to starve the beast, stop using credit cards, atm’s, purchase locally grown food. I’ve recently contacted some hunting buddies and told them I would pay them fair market price for wild meat, (boar, venison), and their eyes lit up with glee. Keep it local and use bartering or strictly cash transactions. Hwyl
