Cheney Warns of New Attacks

February 4th, 2009

Yesterday, Cryptogon reader offthereservation suggested that I look at a list of U.S. State Department notices on the U.S. Embassy site for Japan.

This person said to look at the notices dated 09/07/01 and 09/10/01. Obviously, those were just before The Big Day.

Offthereservation noted that a brand new Worldwide Caution was just released on 2 February.

I thought, “There aren’t too many World Wide Cautions, but maybe it’s a coincidence,” and left it at that.

But today, anothernut sent this interview with Cheney about how “the terrorists” are going to use nuclear or biological weapons against a U.S. city if the torture industrial complex was to scale itself back a bit.

I don’t know. Maybe something, maybe not.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney warned that there is a “high probability” that terrorists will attempt a catastrophic nuclear or biological attack in coming years, and said he fears the Obama administration’s policies will make it more likely the attempt will succeed.

In an interview Tuesday with Politico, Cheney unyieldingly defended the Bush administration’s support for the Guantanamo Bay prison and coercive interrogation of terrorism suspects.

And he asserted that President Obama will either backtrack on his stated intentions to end those policies or put the country at risk in ways more severe than most Americans — and, he charged, many members of Obama’s own team — understand.

“When we get people who are more concerned about reading the rights to an Al Qaeda terrorist than they are with protecting the United States against people who are absolutely committed to do anything they can to kill Americans, then I worry,” Cheney said.

Cheney said “the ultimate threat to the country” is “a 9/11-type event where the terrorists are armed with something much more dangerous than an airline ticket and a box cutter – a nuclear weapon or a biological agent of some kind” that is deployed in the middle of an American city.

“That’s the one that would involve the deaths of perhaps hundreds of thousands of people, and the one you have to spend a hell of a lot of time guarding against,” he said.

“I think there’s a high probability of such an attempt. Whether or not they can pull it off depends whether or not we keep in place policies that have allowed us to defeat all further attempts, since 9/11, to launch mass-casualty attacks against the United States.”

I think it’s too early (for fulfillment of Cheney’s “prediction). Currently, despite Obama’s executive orders, the Cheney security apparatus is still pretty much in place. As such, if something were to happen now, one could theoretically blame Cheney. Dick, ever with his finger on the pulse of popular perception, knows this. I think he’s smart enough to give the Obama administration some time, so that there can be no mistake that it was “Obama’s fault”, the latter having failed to “keep in place policies that have allowed us to defeat all further attempts, since 9/11, to launch mass-casualty attacks against the United States”.

Also, it would be much better timed if it were shortly before the midterm elections, in 2010. That way the Republicans could use it to sweep out the Democrats, impeach the Pres and Vice Pres, and pull off a perfectly orderly and legal coup.

I think it will play out like this:

It does seem like it would be advantageous for the US government to stage another 9/11 type of event.

Much could be accomplished. Perhaps most importantly, it would justify deploying military within the US.

I can just imagine how joyfully the public would respond to the idea of bringing our troops home to patrol our streets, to protect us from terrorists on our own soil. What a great spin on martial law!

Once you had the army deployed at home, to “fight terrorists” within our borders, you could characterize any opposition to government as “terrorist activity.” People will fall for this. In fact, when “our boys” come home to “protect” us, I would expect media coverage of the relieved and joyful public shedding tears and throwing flowers.

At some point, we’re going to have some serious dislocations because of the financial crisis. A terrorist attack could be the right way to play this.

Would it work? Would people accept martial law in some form? I think most people would, if the attack were shocking enough.

Would the government be able to pay the troops? They could probably figure something out. Would the troops become disaffected? It takes a lot to make troops disaffected.

So, yes, I think a “terrorist attack” on some scale is certainly a possibility. Even though there are many things that could go wrong in the aftermath, it would probably play well.

When the proles are rioting on the streets because of hunger and the loss of other comforts, nothing would make them more ready to line up for ration cards / ID implants / the draft than a nuclear “terrorist” event.

Typical politician’s “can’t lose” comment. If he’s wrong, he’ll say, “I’m glad I was wrong,” and everyone will chuckle in agreement with vague respect for a guy who’s willing to admit it when’s he wrong. If he’s right, he gets his dream come true: riding around in armored cars rounding up liberals and gunning down anyone who looks “funny.”

I read this post here last night and thought hoo boy. Chill down girlfriend.
Dick Cheney is an effing joke. The truth will out about 9/11 and Dick, with all his salivating about terrorists will be exposed.
The truth will set us free of all of his boogeymen. He’s just put out more rope on which to hang himself.
This might be one person who we get to see hang himself on all of his lies. And I say Amen to that.
