Neocon Columnist Calls For Military Draft, Cites Possible Invasion Of Pakistan
January 14th, 2009Rahm Emanuel 2006: “This is not a draft. It’s a universal service.”
The U.S. will probably wind up with a conscription plan that falls somewhere between the plans being pushed by these two assholes.

A Washington Times columnist has claimed that a universal military draft is a key necessity if America is to survive throughout and beyond the 21st century.
Tony Blankley, also a former Reagan speechwriter, a former Newt Gingrich press secretary, and currently a Fellow at right wing think tank the Heritage Foundation, makes the call in his new book American Grit.
Blankley says that the US needs a “new nationalism that puts America’s survival first.”
In his opinion this equates to subjecting all eighteen year olds to two years of required military service.
“If we don’t do a lot of things smart and tough, we could get overwhelmed by the rise of China, the rise of India, the rise of radical Islam.” Blankley told the hosts of Fox & Friends on Monday.
“We’ve failed to exploit our energy. We’re not paying enough attention to what our kids are learning — Bill Ayers is actually a senior person in guiding the curriculum design of America.” he said.
“I don’t like it, I love the volunteer army … but we don’t have enough troops,” Blankley stated.
“When George Bush wanted to have the surge, he was told by the senior generals we didn’t have the extra 20,000 troops to finish the war. … Now Obama wants to go to Afghanistan … but he says we don’t have the troops unless we pull them out of Iraq. What happens if Pakistan goes jihadi? We don’t have the troops to go in there and stop them from taking over the nuclear weapons.”
“If we had had enough troops in Iraq, we wouldn’t have lost 4,000 great young men and women,” Blankley claimed. “We needed to flood the field … with 300,000 troops occupying every village and every building and they would never have been able to rise up.”
I hate to say this, but with the employment situation shaping up the way it is, a lot of young men and women might actually appreciate conscription. And post-modern declining empires that don’t want to stop chasing the chimaera of imperial dominion (as the USA elite and much of its population won’t want, I’m sure) generally have no choice but to implement military conscription. Of course, I can sit here and be all dispassionate about it because they’d have to be pretty freaking desperate to draft the likes of me at the age of 42 with all my candidiasis symptoms.
Though if there is a serious war such as an invasion of Pakistan, The Land Where History Just Won’t Quit, there’s going to be young men who want to get out of being sent to the front line. That would mean the Gay Ban would have to become history, because homosexuality simply doesn’t carry the stigma that it did forty years ago. And after international hostilities momentarily ceased, I doubt the ban could be brought back because that would be the sociological equivalent of trying to make a fire burn backwards. (An interesting aside: The gay and lesbian rights movement in this country may have gotten its start from the fact that the draft in WWII made it possible for homosexuals to socially connect with one another; this created a gay and lesbian community in peacetime that had to lurk in the shadows but was still noticeably there just the same.)
How many children does Blankey have? How about Rahm? Obama has two, W has two.
Hey, let their population surplus wipe out our population surplus, and vice versa. Universal military service or whatever, it will still be the dog soldiers versus the dog soldiers, same as it ever was, while the elite assign themselves vacation duty and a veritable smorgasbord of deferments.
Another thing the Neocons and other retros appear clueless about is that a common identity is forming around the world. It will be more and more difficult to get kids to kill other kids who are Facebook friends. What really scares the warmongers is that if world peace breaks out the weapons industry tanks taking a big chunk of the easy-money economy with it. There’s nothing that scares the Daddy Warbucks of the world more than losing their easy money.
it would mildly surprise me if the United States lasted even another six years as an entity, so i seriously doubt Mr. Blankley’s dream of an ever-dominant USA scaring the savages into submission with a flood of sniper fodder will get a chance to play out. what a pity.
