Russ Tice on Boiling Frogs Podcast
June 21st, 2013What we have here is essentially a computer age, orders-of-magnitude-worse extension of what Curt Gentry laid out in J. Edgar Hoover: The Man and the Secrets. Tice said that NSA has turned into a rogue organization, “That’s there to protect its own interests.” That’s nothing new, if you look at bureaucratic politics—all government organizations do this. With NSA, though, they have the capability to turn the screws on people who are responsible for funding.
How far does the blackmailing go? Unfortunately, there wasn’t much detail along those lines, but Tice suggested that a lot of people who might look like they’re running things are really a bunch of compromised puppets. Obama (as Senator) was targeted by NSA, for example, according to Tice. I didn’t get any sense of who’s actually tasking the machine, or for what specific purposes, outside of expanding NSA’s budget, but it’s probably being used to compromise a lot of prominent people inside the U.S. Government. If this sounds outrageous, just read Gentry’s tome to get a feel for what has gone on in past generations.
For Cryptogon readers, there wasn’t much new in terms of technical information about intercept operations, but Tice’s explicit references to space based collection were interesting. He indicated that he was responsible for using “space capabilities” to gather data on U.S. Government officials who had links to the Iraq conflict. Since the volume of information that traverses satellite links is miniscule, compared to the terrestrial systems, my guess (which could be totally wrong) is that U.S. satellites were used to spy on individuals directly. Tice did not go into any details about what types of information NSA gathered on people using satellites. He suggested that the terrestrial intercepts are far more invasive, which makes sense.
