People Who Doodle Learn Faster

August 25th, 2011

I really enjoy Vi Hart’s videos and other work. My head was pretty much wrecked for math by sK0oL. Vi reminds me that it didn’t have to be that way. Check out her latest video, What Is Up with the Noises?:

And, oh yeah…

New research published today shows that doodling helps you learn. In fact, say scientists, students should be encouraged to doodle while they take notes in class.

I am an avid doodler. I find it helps me listen and think. But I have taken a lot of flak for it over the years…

I can remember sitting in first year University Calculus right in the front row and doodling as the Prof lectured. The Prof noticed me doodling and accused me of not paying attention. I promptly recited back his most recent three sentences. Which made the Prof even angrier as this response was in front of the entire class (I was never any good at politics).

Just last week, co-workers were making fun of me for doodling during client phone calls, or while deep in thought.

It just seems the most natural thing to do. I’ve never stopped, because I know it helps me. And I’ve always wondered why more people didn’t doodle. It’s fantastic to now read some affirmation for what I’ve always known was intuitively true for me.

But in this day and age of directly inputting client details straight onto the computer, pen and paper notes are frowned upon by management types everywhere. Being an old boot, they leave me to my old methods, but I wonder and worry about the next generations, who will be growing and learning without the benefit of the scratch of pen on paper. Doesn’t school already dumb them down enough?
