U.S. Average Duration of Unemployment

Even though we’re “creating jobs” each month, this would seem to point to a large, brewing, structural unemployment problem, with a significant chunk of the population permanently out of the workforce. Historically, we’ve never seen anything like this, and the fact that we only had one down-blip during the recovery is stunning.

But this isn’t the only horrible new chart this month.

We’ve compiled several more that will ruin your weekend.

Which means it’s only a matter of time before we see a new wave of “New-est Deal” government “work programs” spring up.

They’ll notch up the ol’ Roosevelt worship, pass out “I Heart Socialists” lapel pins

Meanwhile, civilians will absorb most of the public and/or lower-risk jobs currently sourced to prisons. Naturally, prison labor will then take a nasty turn for the worse…

Does your power utility have yet another annoying exploded reactor containment vessel threatening to ruin the weekend executive golf tournament?

If this is structural unemployment, what sectors have too many jobs and not enough workers? And I don’t mean factories outside of the US.

I don’t think “we’ve ever seen anything like this” might be true for “some.” While I didn’t live through the 1st Great Depression, I got an earful from my parents who did (there was a “generational skip” between myself and my parents – they were old enough to be my grandparents) due to WWII).
The stories I’ve heard (and which as child and teenager I was thoroughly sick of hearing) are treasures to me now. I am lately dwelling on the stories told to me about my maternal Grandfather, who couldn’t find steady work; was a lawnkeeper at the local park for awhile; and then took to making intoxicating drink to which he went to jail for many a time.
Anyways before I wax too eloquent about my history, I wonder why history seems to be repeating itself? What lessons were not learned that these same circumstances of unemployment, national debt, currency crisis, etc. are issues presenting themselves to another generation of humans?
Then I read today that our Congress-Critters overwhelmingly approved some bullshit increase to the Defense budget. While at the same time are dickering over how to cut the deficit!!
There is probably a law somewhere, where you can’t make more war until you are able to care for your citizens well being. Sure I’m dreaming.
But there ought to be several other laws. No jobs go overseas when the unemployment rate reaches 2 per cent. And rake back the “excess gains” from folks who have invested in offshoring. Wow, I’ll bet that would bring jobs back to the country of origin ASAP.
Clinton, Bush I and II, Cheney, would probably have strokes learning that their sweatshops would “suffer.”
If the U.S. goes to hell in a hand basket, its from the likes of these. All of them, every one should have their passports stripped and be in jail.
