Maxed Out

October 2nd, 2007

America is not only far from the world’s wealthiest nation; it is crumbling beneath a staggering burden of individual and government debt. Maxed Out takes us on a journey deep inside the American debt-style, where everything seems okay as long as the minimum monthly payment arrives on time. Sure, most of us may have that sinking feeling that something isn’t quite right, but we’re told not to worry. After all, there’s always more credit! Maxed Out shows how the modern financial industry really works, explains the true definition of “preferred customer” and tells us why the poor are getting poorer and the rich getting richer. By turns hilarious and profoundly disturbing, Maxed Out paints a picture of a national nightmare which is all too real for most of us.

Oh wow. It’s things such as this that sometimes make me think it would ultimately be better if the planet got hit with one of those four-mile-wide nickel-and-iron asteroids.

Some of the stories are pretty tragic, however more and more I caught myself getting irritated by the ‘poor folk taken advantage of by those evil CC companies’. Maybe I’m being harsh, but I didn’t see a whole lot of personal responsibility being taken for the source of the problem – themselves – be it through financial ignorance/mismanagement or plain lack of self control.

The woman whose husband died, selling her plate collection each weekend in a garage sale…..what did she think was going to happen? She and her grown children should have sat down, looked at the numbers, sold the house, and moved into somewhere smaller/cheaper before the problem got out of hand. Happens all the time.

The young couple whos husband joined the guards and was sent to Iraq. He’s busting his a$$, shes calling him to say that we cant make the truck/trailer/house payments and so bankruptcy was the only answer. How about getting a job, and/or sell the truck/trailer/house?

I’m just saying that recognition of the importance of a little self control and personal responsibility would seem to be in order. Its not only the CC companies at fault, here.

Finally, I would love to know how the obnoxious LV realtor is faring at the moment.
