sheeple… it’s like high school never ends. 100,000 lemmings can’t be wrong as they say.
here in oklahoma city, today i was in a car repair shop reading some coverless magazine that looked at first whiff like a news mag. turned out i was reading ‘The Trumpet’. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Philadelphia_Trumpet
the column that intially caught my eye in the first place was about how Obama wants to destroy the constitution, and so on.
this caters to the local (OKC) clientele. the same sort who’d sign such a petition! o, the irony.
that’s my comment’s punchline essentially, but to add to the anecdote, it turns out my iranian buddy joe knows this shop owner (mr. abdul) and says he’s okay, a good guy etc. not dumb. which for me underscored the ‘catering to the local clientele’ line above…
sheeple.
the link above mentions The Trumpet’s anti-islamic slant. joe says mr. abdul’s arabian. so i wonder where arabia fits into the islamic world and how it escapes the rabid anti-islamic froth. i should know but really don’t. got research to do…
joe just got back from Iran (he often goes), and says we need to have breakfast together some time as he’s got new rants for me about the changes there.
And I agree with your observation as well…sometimes I just can’t wrap my head around how and why a good, decent, likeable intelligent person can have such a backwards view of the way things really are. Sure, it’s the ‘conditioning of the system’ and yada yada, but really: what’s missing some people who seem to possess all the faculties for critical thinking and yet so effortlessly embrace the lies… I don’t know.
@lagavulin: thank you, sir.
lovely blog in every way, i might add. (and did, on my link roll.)
why there is any confusion one might speculate on the silences on arabia in otherwise broadside demonizations of the islamic world… the sort of silences that cause uncertainty, doubt, and resultant ‘holes’ in doubted or doubtful knowledge. i should not have been so ignorant and rue admitting it but screw that -repair was more important. and again, i thank you.
i scarfed up your email addy while at your blog. i’m off for a bit. later tonight i’ll peruse your blog at greater leisure.

sheeple the world over, i gather.
Zuma,
I ran into the same question a few years back, and did some research and found a great ideological overview of Mid-Eastern culture that I posted about here: http://deconsumption.typepad.com/deconsumption/2006/01/a_short_primer_.html?no_prefetch=1
