Watercone: Simple Solar Water Distillation System

August 14th, 2007

I actually built a solar water still a few years ago. It’s such a simple concept, but to build a good solar still, you need precise fabrication. Any air leaks/gaps will take the efficiency way down. This is a device that would really benefit from modern manufacturing practices and materials.

The Watercone people understand these things.

Via: Watercone:

The Watercone is a solar powered water desalinator that takes salt or brackish water and generates freshwater. It is simple to use, lightweight and mobile.

Yes, Solar water distillation is very important, and the “Watercone” is a fine design, however, I think the real trip of the trip here is this..

    YOU CAN’T BUY ONE.

    From the Watercone website:

“The Watercone® project is looking for investors and companies to initiate mass production tooling and distribution. So the Watercone can be manufactured for a lower price and become affordable to the people in need.”

This only one of many individual empowering clean technologies that will not be coming to a store near you any time soon.

If it doesn’t consume resources, wear out regularly, or require an infrastructure with centralized control, I’m sorry Baby, you just can’t have it.
