Obama Awarded 2009 Nobel Peace Prize

October 9th, 2009

I thought that this was a hoax, and that, if I left it alone for an hour, all the media will have to admit that they got punked by 4chan or something similar… Nope. It’s real.

And, well, why not? Obama is only perpetuating two illegal wars and a global network of 737 military bases.

Oh yeah, let’s keep in mind what war criminal/Nobel Peace Prize recipient Henry Kissinger said about Obama:

Via: CNN:

President Obama was awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday.

The first African-American to win the White House, Obama was praised by the Norwegian Nobel Committee for “his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.”

“Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future,” the committee said. “His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world’s population.”

The committee also said Obama has “created a new climate in international politics.”

The announcement came as a surprise — Obama’s name had not been mentioned among front-runners — and the roomful of reporters in Oslo, Norway, gasped when he was named.

In his short time in office, Obama has acted on a wide range of issues from the economy to terrorism and wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Yeah I caught this blurb on NPR on the way to work this am. They spun it around an Obama is making the UN stronger meme. The reporters also mentioned Obama is the third sitting American president to win the award, TRoosevelt in 1906 and Wilson in 1919. Wilson (I guess did), like Obama (who is doing) what he can to strengthen that one world is best via a League of Nations or UN.

I started rolling through the usual net news sites this AM and thought it was a joke also…I guess being NotGeorgeBush goes a long fucking way with the Nobel Committee…surely there was some person, somewhere in the world, more deserving of the honor…sorta takes that ‘honor’ part away from the prize…

  4. Zuma says:

this shows a need for a nobel war prize as well, even if just to, erm, ‘contrast’.

I’m dumbfounded, myself. Even my wife, who listens only to NPR for news, said it was the first time anyone has gotten the award for not being George Bush. Well, at least in name and speaking ability.

For escalating in Afghanistan, his judicious use of Predator strikes on Pashtun villages, death squad raids in Somalia & elsewhere, leading a nation that pumps 2/3rds of arms into the world, telling scary lies about Iran whilst pretending to reach out to them, reaching new lows in craven sponsorship of Israel, et cetera. Such grand achievements, rivalling those of fellow Prize Winner Kissinger, and more to come, no doubt. I note ‘Mad’ Menachem Begin went on to invade Lebanon after he got his.
A disgusting farce to legitimize a crumbling hegemon.

Maybe it’s all a clever psychological move. Maybe they want to nudge Obama so that he doesn’t disappoint them by starting something in Pakistan, or he’s motivated to let the frenemy relationship with Russia and China spin out of control, to the detriment of the planet

  8. Larry Glick says:

I expect that He will see this as His mandate to send another 50,000 or so American troops to Afghanistan.

An armaments manufacturer gets all guilty in his old age and dedicates his fortune to rewarding dweebs and dorks for their work in making the world a better place for feeling good about themselves. Every Nobel Prize is interest from the profits made on the sale of some weapon or other. An honorable person would spit on the prize. Too bad Bob Dylan didn’t get it so he could have sung “Masters of War” at the ceremony and then walked out.

  10. AHuxley says:

I first saw this on slashdot org and thought was a scam or joke in the new story section.

War in Iraq, war in mid east, war in the Pakistan ‘area’, gitmo open?
More troops requested? A free pass on fake elections in Afghanistan, your telco is the NSA?

Friendly chats with the world are all you need to be seen as a peace maker?

    Bingo.

And once a person has this harsh reality by the short hairs, the intellectual hurdles to understanding exactly how much “honor” all the various recipients over the last century or so have actually possessed are quite short.

Perhaps the DeBeers people should start giving away statuettes as well…

There’s no way I agree he deserves it, but I may see why they gave it to him. They probably think it will influence him and they MIGHT be right. Its going to be hard, from here on out, to escalate or instigate wars with a peace prize around your neck. Whether it does more harm by diminishing the meaning of the prize, time will tell depending on his actions.
It IS truly hard to swallow since he not only failed to end the wars, but also actively worked against peace in many respects. The scuttling of the Goldstone report on Israeli human rights abuses comes to mind for starters.

….as for the video. Does anyone see Kissinger 2.0 in Clinton? “Hillary Kissinger”? Its like Kissinger is still at work behind the scenes in places like Honduras. Not only the same immoral policies, but they also have the same jowls! LOL
