Britain: “High Risk” of Corruption on Contracts Related to Covid Response, “Equivalent to One in Every £3 Spent”

An anti-corruption charity says it has identified significant concerns in contracts worth over £15.3bn awarded by the Conservative government during the Covid pandemic, equivalent to one in every £3 spent.
Transparency International UK found 135 “high-risk” contracts with at least three red flags – warning signs of a risk of corruption.
Twenty-eight contracts worth £4.1bn went to firms with known political connections, while 51 worth £4bn went through a “VIP lane” for companies recommended by MPs and peers, a practice the High Court ruled was unlawful.
A Conservative spokesperson said: “Government policy was in no way influenced by the donations the party received – they are entirely separate.”
Transparency International UK analysed 5,000 contracts for red flags.
The charity said its analysis also indicated that almost two thirds of high-value contracts to supply items such as masks and protective medical equipment during the pandemic, adding up to a total of £30.7bn, were awarded without any competition.
A further eight contracts worth a total of £500m went to suppliers no more than 100 days old – another red flag for corruption.
Normal safeguards designed to protect the process of bidding for government contracts from corruption were suspended during the pandemic.

Ukraine has unleashed what was reportedly the heaviest drone attack so far against Moscow. The overnight raid on the Russian capital killed at least one person and caused significant damage and disruption. As is typical for Ukrainian attacks of this kind on targets in Russian territory, there was no immediate comment from Kyiv. Russian officials, however, responded angrily, accusing Ukraine of deliberately attacking civilian areas.

Germany Tightens Controls at All Borders in Immigration Crackdown

Germany’s government announced plans to impose tighter controls at all of the country’s land borders in what it called an attempt to tackle irregular migration and protect the public from threats such as Islamist extremism.
The controls will start on Sept. 16 and initially last for six months, the interior ministry said in a statement on Monday.
They are part of a series of measures Germany has taken to toughen its stance on irregular migration in recent years following a surge in arrivals, in particular people fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East.
Large Free Speech Protests in Brazil

Thousands of Brazilians flooded city streets on Saturday to protest against the government’s censorship crusade against Elon Musk’s ‘free-speech’ X platform.
The demonstration, held Saturday on Independence Day, was led by former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro – who said in response to Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes: “I hope that the Federal Senate puts the brakes on Alexandre de Moraes, this dictator who does more harm to Brazil than Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva himself.”
Several notable X accounts, including journalist Michael Shellenberger, are reporting from Sao Paulo’s main boulevard, where tens of thousands have gathered today in opposition to far-left Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes that recently blocked X nationwide.
