Sterling Through $2
April 17th, 2007Via: Forbes:
The British pound broke through the $2 barrier for the first time in 15 years on Tuesday, as currency traders bet that rising inflation would spur the Bank of England to raise interest rates.
The pound was quoted at $2.005 early in the London afternoon.
Wow! What a great time for me to visit America. Except for the fact I’d be treated as a criminal by the humourless thugs in the fascist zone airports and have to submit my fingerprints, get my picture taken, etc.
Out of curiousity, what are your local petrol prices like in U.S. dollars, freeman?
We’re wagering eight-dollar range in more expensive U.K. markets.
We cross the nearby border into Luxembourg for significant discount on fuel and certain taxable goods, which they’re just as certain to find a way to crack down on eventually. Still, prices we’ve paid in LUX for unleaded have ranged from 0.90-1.20 Euro per liter since 2003. Just across the border in Belgium or Germany, prices average 0.25-0.30 cents per liter higher. Same fuel.
Don’t recall what prices were like in Dublin when we were there in 2006, as we were entirely pint-powered by train and foot. Thank God we found the local Powerhouse brewery site. The thought of the fine Guinness tradition all tarted-up by Diageo soured us on that particular bit of tourism.
Made he excuse to hop the train one day, to rail’s end in Bray, to scramble up the edge of the Wicklows and after partake of Powerhouse at the original source — only to discover after a fair sample that Greg the personable manager of the brewpub and inn is also an expat from LA.
