Congress: Trading Stock on Inside Information

Washington, D.C. is a town that runs on inside information – but should our elected officials be able to use that information to pad their own pockets? As Steve Kroft reports, members of Congress and their aides have regular access to powerful political intelligence, and many have made well-timed stock market trades in the very industries they regulate.

So this is fascinating, right? On one hand, it’s easy enough to say, “Oh well of course Congress is corrupt, who doesn’t know that?” But it is significant that a mainstream media outlet (and it’s hard to get more mainstream than 60 Minutes) is covering the issue, and covering it pretty well. Sure, they didn’t talk about Rothschild banking plots and secret eugenics plans, but it was still a pretty solid piece of journalism uncovering real evidence of a kind of corruption that your average American, non tinfoil-hat-wearer can find offensive. It’s the kind of story that could make a few more people sympathize with OWS, and that seems good to me.

So how did this get out? What is our model of the MSM that both kills many significant stories while funding and publicizing others? What is our model of Congress that contains both obvious scum bag elitists and Brian Baird? Am I getting fooled by the porch masons here?

I don’t know, I’m just kind of drunk now and tired of all the doomer smug pessimism about the world.
